A special edition of America’s plastic supercar is coming this summer in celebration of Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary. One hundred years ago, William Durant and Louis Chevrolet teamed up to found Louis’ eponymous car company. Chevrolet, both an engineer and a racer, built some of the fastest cars of his time. Perhaps it’s fitting then the cars built to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chevrolet motorcar company are the fastest cars the company offers today.

The 2012 Corvette Centennial Edition package will be available starting this summer on each version of the Corvette currently offered, including Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR-1. As you can see from the accompanying images the car is absolutely eyeball arresting.
“Racing and performance are the roots of Chevrolet, a tradition carried forward today by Corvette,” says Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “The Centennial Edition celebrates our 100 years and pushes Corvette forward for a new generation of sports car fans.”

Like one of Chevy’s chief competitor’s most iconic cars, (Ford’s Model T) buyers can opt for any color they like for their Centennial Edition Corvette, as long as it’s black. Fortunately, the Corvette’s lines wear black paint really well. Satin black graphics create a black-on-black scheme for the car. The wheels are finished in black satin as well. Subtle red accents are strategically employed to keep all that black from looking too monochromatic.

Actually, the car is black-on-black-on black—as the exterior color scheme is repeated inside the car. Happily, Fisher-Price has been forever banned from Chevy’s sports car, as the interior no longer looks crafted by Playskool. Ebony leather swaddles the instrument panel and doors, complimented by red stitching. This color scheme is repeated on the steering wheel, seats, console and shifter.  A touch of plush is introduced with Microfiber suede accents on the special Centennial Edition seats, as well as the steering wheel, shifter and armrests. By the way, the Microfiber suede accents are carried over from the 2011 Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.
